IRPS-rank officer S Balachandra Iyer has been appointed as the first full-time Registrar of IIT Jodhpur, seven years after its inception.
An officer of Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) and having worked on Director's rank in the secretariat of Union cabinet, Iyer assumed the charge of Registrar of this apex technical institution today.
Director of the IIT Jodhpur, CVR Murti, said that 90 applicants had applied for the post, of which 11 were shortlisted for the interview.
Interestingly, this was the 6th recruitment drive for the post.
Referring to the delay, Murti said that filling of posts did not mean that we consider any persons overlooking his merits and suitability.
"We are in quest of the best possible persons for every post and unless we are not satisfied with the merits and credentials of the candidate, we would prefer the posts to be vacant," Murti said.

Iyer said that he was here for his interest in academics and challenge to work in an evolving institution of this repute.
"IIT attracts best brains of the country and it was very important that we provide them the best atmosphere, so that not only they could reach the apex in their career, but could also return to the society and the country," he said.
The institution has also initiated a fresh process to fill the remaining vacant posts in administrative section.
"We have already issued notification for the recruitment of 2 deputy registrars and 1 assistant registrar. Once these positions are filled, we would be better positioned as far as the operations, planning and new initiatives are concerned," Murti said.
