Students at IIT Kharagpur can learn their favourite subjects even if they aren't admitted into that particular department as the institute now offers a unique system of minor courses and microspecialisations.
Institute officials said the new initiative would be particularly helpful for students who did not get admission into the department of their choice.
Siddhartha Mukhopadhyay, dean of alumni and international relations, IIT-Kgp, said each microspecialisation course is carefully designed to help students get a meticulous grasp and delve deeper into the area.
"It will enable our students to pursue their multifaceted talent in disciplines which they might not have been able to get through JEE or department change," he said.
The 14 microspecialisation subjects range from Information Technology and Applications to Safety Engineering and Intellectual Property Rights.
Minor courses, on the other hand, are academic specialisations in addition to the major field of study, and are taken to pursue an alternate interest and increase employability potential.
P G Keerthana Gopalakrishnan, a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student at the IIT, said the new system allows them to taste whatever they want.
"It promotes academic liberty and we have a number of interdisciplinary courses to actualise our interests," she said.
