The incident occurred yesterday when Hemant and his friend Mahendra had crossed over to the other side of road for buying ice cream after having dinner at the mess at about 9 pm, said Amar Deep Sharma, assistant registrar and spokesperson of the institute.
They were hit by a speeding car while crossing the road and rushed to a private hospital in the institute's ambulance stationed at the hostel, Sharma said.
Institute's director C V R Murti and other faculty members rushed to the hospital on receiving information about the incident.
"We have removed one of Mahendra's kidneys as it was badly damaged and over a dozen units of blood have been administered to him. Next 24 hours are very crucial for him," said a doctor.
