Illegal display of HSRPs: HC directs top cop to explain action

Coming down on the DGP and the Commissioner of Police for not filing compliance reports on alleged illegal display of high-security registration plates for motor vehicles despite its earlier order, the Madras High Court today directed the ADGP (Crime) to be present in the court on February 9 to explain the action taken on the matter.
The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh before which a PIL filed by an ex-serviceman came up, perused the report filed by the Transport Commissioner on an earlier direction, found some numerical discrepancy and asked the Additional Government Pleader to explain it.

As he was unable to do so, the Court granted one week time to the AGP to explain the discrepancy.
The matter relates to manufacture and supply of high-security registration plates.
Petitioner Captain (Retired) S K Santhosh had charged that the tender in this regard was not finalized by Tamil Nadu government in spite of the Supreme Court's cutoff date.
He also alleged that though no tenders were finalised by the state, several persons are supplying the registration plates as if they were the original high-security registration plates and sought a direction from the Court to investigate the matter.
On November 28 2014 the court had referred to the apex court order and directed the authorities to file an affidavit with full details in this aspect.

The bench noted that the DGP and the Commissioner of Police had not filed their compliance reports with regard to the investigation in the fake high security registration plates and directed the ADGP (Crime) to be present in Court to explain action taken.
