Over 100 cartons of illegal liquor meant to be supplied during the upcoming assembly polls and Diwali was allegedly recovered from a tempo bearing the logo of Mother Dairy in Ashok Nagar area here today.
Sunil Kumar Sharma (35), the driver of the vehicle, was arrested by Ashok Nagar police after it received a tip off that a tempo was bringing illegal liquor to the area.
"A trap was laid at the picket. At about 08.15 am, the tempo was seen coming from Chilla regulator side.
"The tempo was stopped at the picket and the driver was asked to open the back door of the tempo and 101 cartons of quarters of whisky meant to be sold in Haryana were seized," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ajay Kumar.
Sharma told police that he brought these cartons of liquors from Gurgaon, Haryana and he was directed to park his tempo near New Ashok Nagar and wait for further directions regarding where and to whom the liquor is to be delivered, according to police.
"During checking of vehicles, police generally does not stop the vehicles containing milk as it is treated as urgent supply item, therefore the tempo was used to transport illegal liquor," said Kumar.
