Illegal mining: Four more weeks time granted to Sagayam

:Madras High Court today granted four more weeks time to IAS officer U Sagayam, appointed as Special officer/Legal Commissioner by it to inquire into illegal mining of granite in Madurai district and submit a report.
The first bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T S Sivgnanam, before which an affidavit was filed on behalf of Sagayam, said police and other authorities should ensure that the information is furnished as sought by him in the the questionnaire within next two weeks.
Earlier, the bench headed by the CJ had granted eight weeks of time to Sagayam on Dec 22 2014 to submit a report on illegal mining in the District of Madurai.
The bench had stated this on a PIL filed by one Ramasamy, seeking a direction to Central Vigilance Commission and Enforcement Directorate, among others, to consider his representation to take appropriate action against illegal mines in the state.
The ED had informed the court that a case had been registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against two firms.
Sagayam as the then District Collector of Madurai had in 2011 pegged loss to the state exchequer due to illegal granite mining at Rs 16,000 crores over the years.
