Hundreds of students today launched sit-in protests against the non-implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Manipur.
Reports from valley districts stated students organised a sit-in demonstration at Paradise English School in Thoubal district, Ananda Singh Academy and Sacred Heart Schools in Imphal East district and at Lalambung Takhellambam area in Imphal West district.
No untoward incident was reported, officials said.
Official sources said the Manipur government has already forwarded the resolution of the Assembly to the Centre and it was now upto the Centre to take a decision on its implementation.
However, social organisations, including Joint Action Committee on ILP, said the demand for ILP implementation was very much within the Constitution and the state government should pursue the matter vigorously with the Centre.
A JACILP spokesman said the number of bonafide Indian citizens who have come into the state for manual work and as labourers have far outnumbered the tribal population in Manipur's hill districts.

The social organisations, including students' bodies and All Manipur students' Guardians Association, have also been demanding immediate implementation of the ILP in the state.
JACILP had also prevented entry of outsiders into the state for five days from June 1 and also entry of outsiders into localities in different parts of valley areas for five days from June 6, official reports said.
Inner Line Permit is an official travel document issued by the Union government to allow inward travel of an Indian citizen into a protected/restricted area for a limited period. It is obligatory for Indian citizens from outside those states to obtain permit for entering into the protected state.
