Police forces were deployed at different places including near educational institutions as students and volunteers of social organisations attempted to take out rallies towards Manipur assembly where session was on to press their demand for implementation of ILPS.
Police prevented students from taking out rallies by blocking them at the school gates and picked up at least nine students including some leaders of the All Manipur Students Union and Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur, sources said.
They said some students were also injured when police made a mild lathicharge to pacify the agitated students.
Police also prevented hundreds of people, organised by the largest social organisation United Committee Manipur (UCM) and arrested three of their members.
Reports from four valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishenpur said large scale sit-in protest were reported from Paona Bazar, Yairipok, Kongpal, Lilong, Basikhong, Palace compound and several other places.
Placards put up at protest sites read, 'Save Manipur', 'Save original inhabitants of the state', 'Politicians open your eyes'.

ILPS restricts entry of outsiders and allows them to remain in the state for certain period, official sources said adding that the number of outsiders including labourers, daily wage earners, and others have now outnumbered from the total tribal population of the state.
"We would soon be in minority in our state," said a spokesman of the Federation of Regional Indigenous society which has been steering the stir for implementation of the ILP for the past few months.
