Drum beating, gulal, slogans and traditional fervour accompanied the immersion processions.
To prevent water pollution, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) and NGOs had appealed the people to donate the idols instead of immersing them in the river, and the appeal got a huge response, civic sources said.
The main immersion procession started from Wakadi-Barav in the presence of mayor Ashok Murtaza, deputy mayor Gurumit Bagga, NMC commissioner Pravin Medam and others. It is expected to continue till late in the night with more than 200 Ganesh mandals participating with floats and tableaux. Police have made elaborate security arrangements at key points.
