More than 35 Congress MPs today staged a demonstration in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Parliament premises demanding that the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act be implemented immediately.
According to former Union Minister and Congress Rajya Sabha MP J D Seelam, the government is a continuous exercise and its commitments must be fulfilled.
"Then Prime Minister had made promises regarding Polavaram project, Special Category status, fiscal incentives and tax concessions and Bundelkhand type package for four Rayalaseema districts and three districts in north coastal Andhra," he said and sought the assurances to be implemented.
The Congress MPs were drawn from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, representing different states in the country, he said.
Stating that the then UPA Government took senior BJP leaders on board about the provisions incorporated in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation bill, Seelam reiterated that the commitments should be implemented.
"All your people, the then Leader of Opposition, who is now the Finance Minister and Venkaiah Naidu, who is now a Minister were taken on board at every stage in the Rajya Sabha. Similarly, Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani knew what was incorporated in the Lok Sabha," he claimed.
