Import of pigs into Mizoram from Myanmar banned
Press Trust of India Aizawl The import of pigs from neighbouring Myanmar into five districts in Mizoram have been banned following detection of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) disease in them, official sources said today.
The district magistrates of Champhai, Serchhip, Lunglei, Lawngtlai and Saiha districts banned the import of pigs from Myanmar.
The ban followed detection of a number of PRRS cases in the state which were confirmed by the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal on June 21.
Experts said that pigs in Mizoram were infected by those imported from Myanmar, the only country in which the dreaded disease was prevalent.
Director of AH and Veterinary Department Dr L B Sailo said that the state government was yet to decide on culling pigs which had recovered after being infected.
