A man was arrested for allegedly
imposing as enforcement official of BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) and trying to extort money from an East Delhi resident, police said here today.
Yogesh Sharma was arrested after he tried to extort Rs 60,000 from Khajoori Khas resident Satyapal Singh for closing a power theft case against him, a BSES spokesperson said.
Sharma, who runs a gang, had gone to Singh's house on the pretext of checking the electricity meter. He removed the meter and made the supply direct and inform the customer that the meter needs to be sent to BYPL lab for testing.
After a few days, Sharma contacted Singh and said the meter was tampered. He even tried to scare Singh by telling him that this tantamount to power-theft and would not only attract a heavy penalty of several lakhs but also lead to imprisonment.
"He offered to end the case for Rs 60,000. Singh requested for a few days time. During this Sharma made daily trips to the customer's residence. But he was neither installing a new meter not issuing any notice to the customer. This made Singh suspicious," the spokesperson said.

The power discom has issued an advisory telling customers not to make any cash payment to anyone visiting their residence on behalf of BSES.
"Customers are advised to verify the identity of persons, claiming to be from BSES, who visit their premises. They should ask for their identity cards and look for BSES logo, BSES hologram, date of issue, validity, photograph, signature of authorised signatory, signature of employee, employee number or I-card number, name/logo/address of the contractor and lamination to ascertain its genuineness," it said.
