After hoisting the national flag at the parade ground of 1st Manipur Rifles battalion here, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh appealed to the insurgents to lay down arms and join the mainstream by participating in development works.

"There is no place for violence in a democratic set-up like ours and everything could be settled through discussions and dialogues," Singh said.

He hailed the achievements of boxer Mary Kom and other Olympians from the state.

Official sources said security measures were tightened across the state in view of the Independence day boycott call given by insurgent outfits like United National Liberation Front, People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, Revolutionary People's Front and Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup.

Police and para military personnel were patrolling at vulnerable points and random checking was on at various places to detect movement of the ultras.

Traffic between Manipur and neighbouring states and within the state was affected due to the boycott call given by the insurgents, sources said.

Independence day was also celebrated at all the district headquarters.
