Haryana Congress today claimed that over 100 Independents who were declared winners in the seven newly created municipal corporations were Congress supporters.
"Barring one or so, almost all winners of MCs elections that took place in Haryana are Congress supporters," Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee President Phul Chand Maulana told reporters here today.
The ruling Congress did not contest on party symbol.
As per poll outcome of seven MCs, 103 independents won the elections in Ambala, Panchkula, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak and Hisar.
Stating that the success of Congress supporters proved that public had supported the policies of Bhupinder Singh Hooda government in the state, Maulana said, "The victory has exposed the opposition parties (INLD, BJP) which tried to seek votes through false propaganda launched against Congress in the elections but their own candidates themselves got knocked out."
Maulana said the party will claim Mayoral seat in all these MCs where elections took place.
Asked whether the party intends to go for early Vidhan Sabha polls considering the victory of Congress supporters, Maulana while ruling out this possibility saying that the assembly elections will be held as per schedule.
Out of 144 wards, the independent candidates won in 103 wards while the candidates of the BJP won in 25 wards whereas those of the INLD won in 16 wards in the elections that were held on Sunday.
