Independents dominate Haryana MC poll

Independents won 103 of the 144 wards of the seven newly-created municipal corporations in Haryana where elections were held on Sunday.
The ruling Congress did not contest on party symbol. The opposition BJP and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), which had put up candidates, won the remaining 41 seats. While BJP won 25 seats, INLD bagged 16, State Election Commissioner Dharam Vir told reporters here today.
The elections were held to the seven newly-created municipal corporations of Ambala, Panchkula, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak and Hisar.
The polling was held for total 144 wards where 1,686 candidates were in the fray. The poll percentage was 68.8 and in all 10,75,885 electorates had cast their votes.
BJP won four seats in Ambala, seven in Yamunanagar, three in Karnal and Panchkula each, six in Panipat and two in Rohtak.
Independents bagged 15 seats in Karnal, 14 each in Ambala and Panchkula, 16 each in Hisar and Panipat, 17 in Rohtak and nine in Yamunanagar.
INLD got four seats in Hisar, two in Karnal, three in Panchkula, two in Panipat, one in Rohtak and four in Yamunanagar.
Haryana Congress president Phool Chand Mullana claimed in a statement that most of the Independents who won were from Congress.
