The government today floated a global tender for import of 10,000 tonnes of rice in insurgency-affected north-eastern state of Manipur to avoid possible grain shortage for PDS supply following construction of railway line.
As per the tender invited by State Corporation of India (STC), bidders have to supply 25 per cent broken white rice for delivery between October 15 and November 15 at FCI godowns in Manipur.
Bids will open and close on the same day -- September 23. The offer should be made for a minimum 5,000 tonnes in euro per tonne basis.
Although India has huge surplus stocks of rice, the government' FCI is planning to import the grain for the Public Distribution System (PDS) because of the transportation problems in north east region due to construction work of railway line.
Food Corporation of India is targeting to import about one lakh tonnes of rice to ensure adequate supply in Manipur and Mizoram through PDS.
