Playing their final pool match, the India women's team lost out to England 0-1 in the ongoing Volvo Invitational U-21 Hockey Tournament here today.
Coming at the back of a 6-1 thrashing of New Zealand -- their only win in the tourney so far, India displayed good skills throughout the match but failed to get past the English sticks.
It was Kate Holmes of England who created some space for herself and struck a field goal in the 47th minute to take a 1-0 lead that proved decisive enough.
The first half of the match saw India dominating the game by continuously penetrating England's half and they managed to secure a penalty corner opportunity but it was adeptly saved by the goalkeeper Amy Tennant.
The game turned out to be tough as both the sides were best with their respective defence line-up and in no mood to give away easy scoring prospects to the other. As both India and England prevented each other from scoring, the first half went dry on goals.
The second half of the game witnessed a much more intense battle and was packed with attacks and counter attacks. The teams displayed a superior quality of game as the girls were in dire need of opening the score-card and England got lucky with a Kate strike.
India was seen putting extra efforts in the game to level the scores with England as they tried to create goal scoring opportunities for themselves on many occasions but were restricted by England.
However the Indian team displayed good coordination and trying to close the gaps by ensuring good possession of the ball and earned crucial penalty corners but stood unsuccessful in converting them.
