India-Pak cricket match: Four bookies held for accepting bets

Mumbai Police has mounted its vigil to clamp down on betting syndicates that are likely to be operational in the city

Four bookies have been arrested from south Mumbai for allegedly accepting bets on India-Pakistan World Cup match played in Australia, police said today.

The bookies Bhavesh Rathod, Rajesh Chourasiya, Mayur Jain and Mukesh Mehta were arrested yesterday from their operation centre in Bhuleshwar in south Mumbai, police said.

They were produced before a court today, which remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days, police added.

Acting on a tip-off, a room at Anant Wadi in Bhuleshwar was raided when the quartet were found accepting bets on mobile phones on India and Pakistan match.

"Six mobile phones, a laptop and a television were seized from them," said Deputy Police Commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni.

As the ICC Cricket World Cup matches are underway, Mumbai Police has mounted its vigil to clamp down on betting syndicates that are likely to be operational in the city.
