The Department of Posts (DoP) will tomorrow release a commemorative postage stamp on liver transplantation in India, an official statement said.
The first successful liver transplantation in India was performed at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi in November 1998 and since then around 4,500 such transplants have been done in the country, it added.
The release of the postal stamp acknowledges the progress and milestones achieved by the Indian medical fraternity in the field of Liver transplantation in the span of the last 15 years, it said.
Estimated at USD 78.6 billion as of 2012, the sector has emerged as one of the largest sectors in India and is poised to grow at an annual rate of 15 per cent to reach about USD 158.2 billion by 2017.
