The 22-member group, launched today, will be headed by B K Handique and has members such as P Karunakaran and Shanta Kumar among others.
Commending the initiative, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar hoped the group would further bolster bilateral ties, said a statement issued today.
Welcoming a parliamentary delegation from Singapore, led by Speaker of Parliament of Singapore Michael Palmer, Kumar noted the increase in bilateral trade, especially after signing of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) in 2005.
Similarly, the Defence Cooperation Agreement (2003) has further consolidated the bonds of friendship, she said.
Referring to the presence of more than 4000 Indian companies in Singapore, Kumar thanked the delegates for providing an enabling business environment to these companies which has further cemented commercial ties.
On the newly-launched India-Singapore Friendship Group in Parliament, Palmer said a similar group exists in Singapore Parliament also and the two groups should be warm and proactive in their approach, rather than being routine bodies, the statement said.
