The centre at an estimated cost of Sri Lankan Rs 1.2 billion is to be built during the next 36 months on a plot of land adjacent to the northern capital's famous landmark, the Jaffna Public Library, the Indian High Commission said today.
A Memorandum of Understanding for the project was signed between India and Sri Lanka last week.
The cultural centre will provide suitable social infrastructure for the people of the northern province, especially for the people of Jaffna, help them to reconnect with their cultural roots and rejuvenate and nurture the ancient cultural heritage of Jaffna.
Since the military conflict ended in Sri Lanka's northern and eastern region 5 years ago, India has undertaken several projects to rebuild the war-torn infrastructure.
