A 45-year-old Indian was today arrested in Nepal for allegedly trying to smuggle foreign currency worth USD 80,000 into the country from China.
The man identified as Sanjay Mishra was arrested by the police from Jagati of Bhakatpur this afternoon during a security check while he was heading to Kathmandu on a vehicle, The Himalayan Times reported.
Mishra hails from Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, the report said.
Police has confiscated USD 71,940 and Chinese Yuan 50,000 from him.
He was reportedly smuggling the fortune from Khasa, China. Acting on a tip-off, a police team laid a trap and made the arrest, police said.
Nepal's existing law does not allow anybody to carry undocumented foreign currencies. A person is required to take permission from the Nepal Rastra Bank or have reliable sources to possess foreign currency, the media report said.
