Indian chefs have been invited to compete in a new international prize to honour a chef who has made an exceptional contribution to "improving society through gastronomy".
The Basque Culinary World Prize was launched yesterday by the Basque Culinary Center, one of the world's most prestigious gastronomic universities with a well-known Research and Innovation Centre in the field of food and gastronomy.
"We believe the world of gastronomy can have a positive influence on society when chefs take on the responsibilities that come with having a public voice. Our aim is to uncover examples of great work that has made a difference from chefs around the world, whether they are known or unknown," said Joxe Mari Aizega, head of the Basque Culinary Center.
Each year, the prize of 100,000 euros will be awarded to an exceptional chef from anywhere in the world who demonstrates by his or her own work how gastronomy can be force for change.
The unique feature of this prize is that it is judged by the world's best chefs - so the winner will have won the respect of the most lauded chefs in the world.
The inaugural prize, awarded by the Basque Culinary Center in San Sebastian, Spain's Basque region, and promotedby the Basque government, will be awarded on July 11 this year.
To be considered for the award, chefs will have to be nominated by another professional who is currently working in the world of gastronomy - for instance, another chef, food writer or food supplier, or an institution.
Nominations will close on April 30, 2016 and the nominations can be made via the Basque Culinary World Prize website.
