After missing out on several opportunities, the Indian women finally scored the much awaited victory, disposing off United States 3-1 in the fifth round of World women teams chess championship here today.
Grandmaster Koneru Humpy showed the way as the ladies got in their groove and Soumya Swaminathan also scored a hard-earned victory on the fourth board to complete the triumph.
Humpy defeated Tatev Abrahamyan on top board while Soumya got the better of Alisa Melekhina on the fourth.
On the second board D Harika was surprisingly held to a draw by Katerina Nemcova while on the third Padmini Rout salvaged a half point after struggling against Sabina Foisor.
Humpy with black got a level position as black and had to work hard to make a breakthrough out of a closed Sicilian. Tatev was practical in her approach as she went for an equal position but Humpy was relentless in the ensuing rook and pawns endgame wherein the best ever Indian woman player was precise like a machine.
Earlier, Padmini Rout was first to sign peace while Harika was visibly upset with herself as she was not able to convert a slightly better position against Nemcova. Soumya Swaminathan netted the first point for herself as well as on the fourth board. The Sicilian dragon by Melekhina led to some wild complexities in which
Soumya out-calculated her opponent and won a piece. However, soon after, the Indian missed the thread and what was a hands down winning position became a tough position to defend.
