A four-year-old Indian girl has died in Dubai after high fever and nausea, triggering panic over a possible meningitis outbreak even as health authorities ruled it out and are probing the matter.
The girl had developed high fever and nausea on Sunday and her family, suspecting it to be a normal viral flu, had rushed her to a doctor who prescribed her medicine, but she died during treatment next day.
The doctors had suspected meningitis as the cause of her death. However, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) in its investigation ruled out meningitis or any communicable disease as the cause of death.
In a statement, the DHA said there are no cases of meningococcal meningitis in Dubai.
It said the reason for the death of the girl, whose father is a banker from Kerala, was currently under investigation by the heath authorities to determine what exactly went wrong, Emirates 24|7 news reported.
The authorities at the girl's school have informed the parents of the students that there is no need to panic.
"Obviously the matter is still ongoing for the family and health authorities, but they have confirmed we can reiterate to our parents that there is nothing to be concerned about," the school said.
"The school has already communicated with parents to provide them with information about the case. At this stage, we urge parents to remain calm and wait for the official communication," it said.
