Indian Museum Director Dr B Venugopal, whose tenure has been embroiled in controversies for alleged neglect of the museum artifacts, has stepped down from the post.
Dr Jayanta Sengupta, Secretary and Curator of Victoria Memorial Hall Kolkata, has been appointed as the Director-additional charge of Indian Museum from June 20, an official order said today.
It said that Venugopal, who had joined the museum in October 2013, has been released on premature repatriation from the post.
Sengupta would be in charge of the museum for a period of six months or till the appointment was made for the post.
Venugopal has been at the receiving end as a number of cases of alleged neglect in handling and storing of museum artifacts came to the fore.
Eyebrows also raised after senior museum official Sunil went missing a year ago.
The museum, the oldest in Asia, has completed 200 years of its existence. The Union Culture Ministry has funded Rs 100 crore for its makeover, which was being done in two phases.
