Police in East Hartford in Connecticut are investigating the scam in which two South Windsor residents were called by someone with an accent possibly of Indian descent.
The caller said that the victims owed money to the 'Department of Social Security' and that they would be arrested if they did not send money via 'Moneygram', a report in FoxCT news said.
The report said one of the residents went to a Walmart store in Manchester and sent USD 500 via Moneygram.
Police is warning residents of the city to not share account information with anyone calling to say they are from Social Security.
They should instead contact local Social Security office or police to confirm whether or not information is really needed.
