A woman of Indian origin, charged with stabbing to death the fiancee of her former lover, has been denied bail by an Australian court.
Manisha Patel, 30, allegedly stabbed Purvi Joshi, 28, several times in the stomach before leaving her for dead in Sydney last month. She was arrested on Wednesday night at Girraween in Sydney.
Patel was produced in Fairfield Local Court yesterday and charged with a count of murder. She did not apply for bail but it was formally refused by Magistrate James Coombs.
The woman suffered a stab wound to her stomach two days after she allegedly stabbed Joshi and police believe it may have been self-inflicted. Patel underwent surgery and was later released.
Police said Joshi's fiance found her with stab wounds in their Bestic Street home at 7 am on July 30. He called an emergency service but she was later pronounced dead.
Patel allegedly stabbed Joshi sometime between 11 pm on July 29 and 7 am on July 30, court documents said.
Detectives investigating the case told media they believed Patel had a prior relationship with Joshi's fiancee. It is not known how long the pair had been seeing each other.
Patel is now expected to appear in the Central Local Court in October.
