An inebriated joint block development officer, who was found lying on the road by a local women's group here was handed over to the police, officials said Monday.
The Alipurduar district magistrate Nikhil Nirmal said the joint BDO of Patlakhaoa in Alipurduar block 1 had been to a government programme here on Sunday evening and was later found lying drunk on the road.
The women's group 'Pramila Bahini' has been active in the area for sometime and has been creating awareness among the people against drinking.
They first tried to revive the BDO by pouring water on him thinking he was unwell. But when it was apparent that he was drunk they informed the police, who took him away, Nirmal said.
'Pramila Bahini' leader Nirubala Ray said "We do not want such a BDO. We have handed him over to the police for action. We have ourselves demolished a number of shops selling liquor".
Moynaguri police confirmed the incident.
The district magistrate said the matter is being probed.
