An initiative has been launched to mark World Heart Day which aims to encourage people to incorporate walking as a part of their daily lives for better health and fitness.
Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and Max Bupa have come together to promote 'Walk for Health', an initiative to encourage people to take up walking as a regular activity.
Manasije Mishra, CEO, Max Bupa, said, "As Indians, we are prone to chronic ailments, more so with our sedentary lifestyles and increasing stress levels. Research across the globe has shown that walking 15 to 30 minutes daily can prevent diseases and help us keep our hearts healthy."
The initiative, which aims to create awareness about the benefits of walking, will also promote 'Ground Miles', a new smartphone application, which can help track walking habits online.
India has the largest number of cardiac patients, numbering over 100 million people or nearly 10 per cent of the total population.
