The injured elephant writhing in pain was seen by the local people at the foot of the Pancharatna hill under Goalpara forest range, who informed the police and forest officials.

Forest department officials came with veterinary doctors, who gave two injections to the injured jumbo, official sources said.

A rescue team from Guwahati has also rushed to the area to safely bring out the pachyderm from the mud pit and provide it medical treatment, the sources said.

The forest department officials said that the elephant was injured during a fight with another jumbo.

The local people, however, claimed that the animal was wounded by poachers who sawed away its tusks and the tip of its trunk.
