The pachyderm was found lying on ground as it was unable to move due to injuries in Sadapatti area falling under Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, some 30 km from here.
The villagers spotted the injured animal and later informed the forest department officials.
Two veterinary doctors rushed to the area this morning, along with two 'kumkis' (tamed elephants) to control it, forest department officials said.
The elephant was given a mild tranquiliser dose to treat the wounds with medicines and bandages. The elephant was slowly driven to the jungles and released there, they said.
