Haryana's principal opposition party INLD today alleged a scam in the purchase of benches for parks and public places in the state.
Senior INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala accused the ruling BJP of extending benefits to their favourites in purchase of benches.
"The benches which have been installed are commonly available in the market ranging from Rs 1,900 to Rs 2,200, but these are being purchased for anything between Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,200," he alleged.
He said the government has been purchasing about 50 to 100 benches for a village or town depending upon the population.
"At some places, you will find these benches even on roadside where no one uses them. What is shocking is that these benches are being bought from the firms of the BJP MLAs, leaders or their kin," Abhay alleged while talking to mediapersons here.
"We have ascertained these facts while more facts will be known in near future as our party workers have sought more information through Right to Information (RTI) applications," he said.

Chautala alleged that the BJP government in the state was "neck deep in corruption" and would surpass even the previous Congress regime.
He also claimed to have proof of alleged corruption by BJP members in the state, which he would make public in future.
Chautala hit out at the Khattar government on the issue of crimes against women in the state, including recent incidences of gang-rapes.
Meanwhile, INLD's deputy leader and former minister, Jaswinder Sandhu alleged that chapters from the textbooks pertaining to the life of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur, had been removed from textbooks of the State School Board.
"The chapters pertaining to Guru Teg Bahadur's life have been dropped from the textbooks of Classes 8th, 9th and 10th. It is sad that this has been done. Guru sahib sacrificed his own life to protect the faith of others, but it is most unfortunate that the BJP government in Haryana choses not to let the children know about such a great personality," he said.
