The National Green Tribunal today directed the city government and other authorities concerned to inspect all the 13 flyovers in the city and apprise it of the possibility of installing rainwater harvesting system.
A bench headed by NGT chairperson Swatanter Kumar directed the Delhi government, Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee and Ground Ground Water Authority (CGWA) to conduct an inspection of the flyovers on February 25 and 26 and submit a report to the tribunal on March 4.
"NCT of Delhi, DJB, DPCC and Ground water Authority, should conduct an inspection of all the flyovers on February 25 and 26 and submit a report next week to the tribunal positively," the bench said.
The directions came while hearing a petition filed by Mehrauli resident Vinod Kumar Jain seeking directions to make it compulsory for all government building of 100 sq m and above to have rain water harvesting through storing of rain water.
In his petition, Jain contended that according to the estimate given by DJB, 65,000 litres of rain water can be captured from 100 sq m sized roof top which can meet water requirement of a family of four for 160 days.
He has cited a Delhi High Court order, in which CGWA had pointed out that rain water harvesting could be implemented easily in 13 flyovers in Delhi.
