A week after the agitation in Jalpaiguri district against the alleged rape and murder of a teenage girl in neighbouring Bhutan, the inspector-in-charge of a police station was today relieved of his duties and sent to police lines.
A senior police officer said the IC of Banarhat police station Manik Debnath was 'closed' today for failing to take prompt action during the violence which caused traffic snarl-up along the road leading upto Bhutan and delay in bringing back the girl's body and autopsy.
Debashish Ghosh, the circle inspector of Raiganj has taken over the place of Debnath.
Protests broke out last Sunday after the discovery of the body of the girl, who had gone to Bhutan to work as a maid, in Samtse district.
Alleging that the girl - a resident of Banarhat in the district - was raped and murdered, locals blocked the SAARC Road linking India and Bhutan and resorted to arson.
The angry protesters torched and vandalised several vehicles.
