The Punjab police have arrested an inter-district gang of fraudsters, accused of cheating migrants of lakhs of rupees, officials said today.

City Station House Officer (SHO) Jatinderjit Singh said the fraudsters were arrested based on a tip-off on August 4. A car and three wads of paper covered with fifty rupee notes on both sides were recovered from them, he added.

As per the modus operandi, the gang would exchange real currency with bundles of paper fastened with fifty rupee notes on both side, the SHO said.

The gang operated in cities where there was a high presence of migrant population, he said.

All gang members are from Uttar Pradesh, but they were presently living in a rented accommodation in Phagwara. They were identified as Munish Kumar, a resident of Adharpur in Pratapgarh district, Bislesh Kumar of Tungri Chauhan in Devria district and Durmesh Kumar in Sultanpur district.

The arrested were booked under sections 420, 406 and 120-B of IPC, he said.
