International Yoga Day observed in Assam

Assam today joined the rest of the country in observing the International Day of Yoga with Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain and Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal participating at the state-level programme in Nagaon, officials said.

Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Statistics and Programme Implementation Vijay Goel also participated in a yoga session organised by Kamrup District administration here.

Goel said that yoga was the best initiative taken up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to keep the people fit and healthy.

Speaking at the function in Nagaon, the chief minister appealed to the youths to adopt yoga as a part of their daily lives to achieve mental peace and physical harmony.

The state Minister of Health and Family Welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma, former chief minister Praffulla Mahanta, and a number of MLAs participated, an official release said here.

Assam Governor Jagadish Mukhi also participated in the Yoga Day programme along with the First Lady Prem Mukhi and several prominent personalities at the Raj Bhawan here.

He said that yoga is for all round development which connects body with soul and everybody should practice yoga to maintain a healthy and a disease free life.

The day was also observed in all district headquarters, sub-divisional headquarters, developmental blocks and in some gaon panchayats and anganwadi centres with a large number of people participating in the yoga demonstration as per Common Yoga Protocol.
