A day after he gave Iraqis a reason to cheer with his football skills, star forward Mohammed Dawood sent a 'message of hope and solidarity' to people back home after seven children were killed in the past one week due to shortage of food and medicine.
Coach Qahtan Chitheer, Dawood and goalkeeper Ali Ibadi were seen holding posters that read: "We are the voice..."
An Iraqi team official said it's their way of showing solidarity with the victims' families.
"Shortage of medical supply killed seven chlidren in past week at the Barsa Children Hopital," the team official told PTI.
Having tasted their maiden victory in the FIFA U-17 World Cup yesterday, Iraq have four points in two matches and are on the verge of a pre-quarterfinal qualification.
Riding on a Dawood goal, Iraq held two-time champions Mexico 1-1 in their opening match and will take on group leaders England in their final Group F match on October 14.
