Italy's interior minister says a few dozen Italians are fighting within the ranks of the Islamic State in northern Iraq and Syria, and Italy is concerned that the extremist group already represents a terror threat to Rome.
In an interview published today in the Corriere della Sera newspaper, Angelino Alfano cited the June 29 announcement by the Islamic State that its fighters would "conquer Rome" as they seek to establish a caliphate, or Islamic state. He said Italy was treating that threat with "high vigilance."
Thousands of Christians have been forced to convert to Islam or flee as Islamic State militants have seized control of large territories in both Iraq and Syria.
Alfano said a few dozen Italian citizens were fighting, while a few dozen others had been killed.
