The tragedy occurred a year back when Sanjay Paul, a head constable with the para-military force, got his pregnant wife admitted to the paramilitary forces' base hospital here for delivery.

Paul's 26-year-old wife Pulumoni delivered a baby girl on May 15 last year but the couple's happiness lasted only for four days as the baby died due to "exceptionally high" levels of jaundice.

The ITBP hospital, apparently unable to handle the situation, referred the baby to Modi hospital which on seeing the deteriorating condition of the baby further referred her to Safdarjung hospital where she died on May 18, 2011.

Two separate enquiries by the Director (Medical) and Inspector General (Special Frontier) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) had said that two specialist doctors posted at the force's base hospital in south Delhi were allegedly at fault and the newborn could have been saved had there been a timely intervention by the authorities.

ITBP Director General Ranjit Sinha, had immediately suspended, pending enquiry, the two doctors-- Specialist Medical Officer (Paediatrician) Deepti Wahi and M M Hansdak but the order was subsequently revoked on technical grounds and the final action taken report is still awaited since then.

When contacted by PTI, Dr Wahi refused to comment on record saying that the "matter was sub-judice".

While the couple still hopes for justice, the doctors involved in the case, in their submissions to the enquiry panel, have reiterated that the death of the baby was "unfortunate" but no negligence on their part had taken place. MORE
