Ivory worth Rs 14 lakh recovered from engineering student

A piece of ivory weighing six kg worth Rs 14 lakh was recovered from an engineering student in Guwahati, police sources said today.
On a tip-off based on information from his friend about his nexus with illegal animal parts traders, police arrested the student from Guwahati yesterday. He is is a second semester electronics student of Prince of Wales Institute of Engineering, Jorhat, and hails from Golaghat.
According to police, the ivory is worth Rs 2.5 lakh per kg in the international black market.
During interrogation, the student confessed about his involvement in illegal trading and handed over the 6 kg ivory piece to the police which was kept inside his suitcase in his room at the private hostel he lived in, police said.
