J-K govt directs officers to accelerate work on housing

The directions were given by Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand during a review meeting of the current financial year's working plans of the Housing and Urban Development Departments here yesterday, an official spokesman said.

He was informed that Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has completed 82 works out of proposed 304 this year while work was full in swing on 47 other projects, the spokesman said.

The corporation has generated revenue of Rs nine crore during the last fiscal while it is expected to surpass Rs 10 crore this year, he said.

The spokesman said Rs 20 crore have been earmarked for improving the drainage system in the city during that period.

Tara Chand asked the officers of Srinagar Development Authority to take necessary steps for developing new housing colonies besides speeding up work on the projects identified for setting up of housing colonies in Srinagar city.

He was informed that Rs 30 crore have been earmarked for development of Rakhi Aarath colony during current fiscal while 1,000 more plots have been fully development for allotment to the displaced Dal lake dwellers. An amount Rs 210 crore stand expended out of Rs 299 crore provided by the Central Government for the purpose.

Emphasising the need for third party evaluation of works, the Deputy Chief Minister said it will go a long way in ensuring transparency and accountability at all levels.
