J&K govt seeks additional funds from Centre for edu sector

The Jammu and Kashmir government today sought additional funds for the education sector in the state from the Centre.
State Education Minister Altaf Bukhari met Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar in Delhi this evening to press for release of additional funds in key areas of school and higher education sectors besides incorporating more courses under the Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme, an official spokesperson said here.
The minister was accompanied by senior officers of the state education department, the official said.
Assuring full support of the Centre, Javadekar said his priority is to raise the quality of education and ensure that it encourages innovation in Jammu and Kashmir, the spokesperson said.
To revive the education sector and create quality learning environment for holistic personality development of children, Bukhari asked the Centre for a special fund of Rs 300 crore for the recently designated 146 Chief Minister's Model schools in the state.
Bukhari also asked for Rs 100 crore under the Prime Minister's Development Programme for setting up of additional infrastructure and hostels in each out-campuses of Kashmir University, Jammu University, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University and Islamic University for Science and Technology, Awantipora.
The state education minister also impressed upon Javadekar to expedite establishment of permanent campuses for IIT, IIM and IIMC, besides appointment of Director for NIT Srinagar, IIT Jammu and IIM Jammu, the spokesperson said.
