Jammu and Kashmir government today said that encroachments in and around the Nigeen Lake, a major tourist attraction, would be removed for its conservation and beautification.
MoS for Housing and Urban Development M Ashraf Mir, while addressing an officer's meeting here said, relocation and rehabilitation of some families from in and around the lake are part of the steps to restore its past glory.
"The encroachments are choking the lake and posing a serious threat especially during the floods," he said.
Mir, who conducted an extensive tour of the lake before chairing the meeting, said the matter will be taken up with the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
Popularly known as the 'Jewel in the Ring', Nigeen is famous with tourists for its deep blue waters and is actually part of Dal Lake, being linked through a causeway.
