The District Magistrate has imposed the ban on the extraction of minerals like sand and bajri from rivers, culverts and causeways with immediate effect, officials said here.

This is to keep a check on their uncontrolled extraction from rivers and riverines which are in close vicinity of motorable and railway bridges as this is likely to cause damage to their foundations, the officials said.

Among these are areas around river Tawi, nallah near Sidhra bridge, Jajjar Nallah and Kattal Battal.

The DM also asked the District Mineral officer, Geology and Mining Department, Jammu, besides Tehsildars and Station House Officers (SHOs) to ensure the compliance of the order.

Mining and quarrying should be in strict conformity with the norms laid down by the Geology and Mining Department, the officials added.
