"Police need to have a good understanding and a very close relationship with the community especially youth to create a safe environment in the state," ADGP (Armed and Law and Order) K Rajendra said on the sidelines of a function here.
"Most of the population in the country is of youth and it is these people who can bring a positive change in the society," Rajendra told reporters after the opening ceremony of 'Jashn-e-Dal', a water sports event organised by J and K Police.
Rajendra said such events help the state youths showcase their potential and provide them a platform to further compete at the national and international levels.
He said the J and K police has been organising such events to promote water sports and will continue to do so.
Expressing concern over shrinking of Dal Lake area, the ADGP said the lake is the identity of Kashmir and police will organise programmes to restore the pristine beauty of the lake.
"Dal (lake) is our identity. But it is shrinking day by day. It is our duty to conserve it and we will support everyone, including dal dwellers to conserve it. We will help in cleaning and restoring it to its pristine beauty. We will organise many programmes in this regard," he said.
Jashn-e Dal is an annual water sporting event organised by Jammu and Kashmir Police which sees a participation of many youth from across the state in the events like swimming, dragon racing, etc.

This year though, swimming competitions will not be held as the event is taking place late this year and the temperatures have dropped considerably in the valley.
Rajendra cited the busy schedule of the police, on account of many VVIP visits in the recent months, as the reason for the delay in organising the event this year.
IGP Kashmir S M Sahai was prominent among the others who attended the function.
