An umbrella organisation of separatists here today urged the United Nations to dedicate a special day -- International Day of Solidarity -- for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a memorandum addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) said such a day will provide an opportunity "to remind the international community of the unresolved Kashmir issue".
The memorandum was released to the press after the police foiled the JRL's march to the local UN office earlier in the day.
The JRL, comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, also asked the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to fulfil its obligations towards ensuring peace along the Line of Control.
"Ceasefire cannot be monitored from Srinagar or Muzaffarabad offices. Something tangible needs to be done for achieving the objective. The least it can do is to bring the belligerents to the negotiating table. The hostilities must stop immediately to save further loss of life and property, the memorandum read.
The separatists on Thursday had asked people to observe a shutdown today -- the International Human Rights Day -- and march towards the office of UNMOGIP at Sonwar here to protest alleged rights violations.
Authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar to maintain law and order in view of the strike and the march to the local office of the United Nations called by separatists.
