Police are seeking legal opinion before initiating further action against an English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) proctor, after he was booked for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 29-year-old PhD student from Jammu and Kashmir.
A case of abetment to suicide under section 306 of the IPC was registered against professor H K Vizra, who is also the proctor of EFLU, after a research scholar Kamran Mudasir (29) committed suicide by hanging himself at his hostel room on the campus of the city-based EFLU on March 2.
When asked if Vizra was being arrested, police said they have sought a legal opinion in this regard even as a group of students held protests on the EFLU campus demanding action against university authorities including Vizra, after boycotting classes over the incident.
EFLU students had alleged harassment and inaction on the part of the university authorities following Mudasir's death.
According to police, Mudasir, a native of Parigam in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, committed suicide due to personal differences with his roommate and fellow PhD student Vasim Salim.
Police said yesterday that Mudasir was issued memo by prof Vizra on January 29 to explain his "misbehaviour" with Salim who had earlier complained to the authorities about "repeated physical and mental harassment" being meted out to him by Mudasir.
