"I have sent my resignation to the chancellor. I am yet to get the acceptance," Bhattacharya told PTI here today.
Bhattacharya, along with the pro-vice chancellor and the registrar, was gheraoed for 51 hours by engineering students of the university from September 18 demanding revocation of suspension of two fourth-year students on ragging charges.
The suspension of the students were not revoked despite the 51-hour long gherao, owing to which the vice-chancellor had fallen ill and had to be treated by doctors.
"I have put in my papers on personal grounds," he said, adding he would like to go back to IIT Kharagpur where he taught mechanical engineering.
"I would like to go back there to teach after my resignation is accepted by the Chancellor," Bhattacharya said.
