: Huge stocks of Jaggery powder has piled up in the Regulated Market Committee at Kavindapady, about 25 km from here, reportedly due to poor purchases from Dhandauthapani temple at Palani, one of the main buyers.
RMC superintendent Vani said the temple usually buys about 50,000 bags, each weighing 60 kg from this market for preparation of 'Panchamritham'.However they had not placed any tenders for purchase in the last few weeks, she said.
She said the temple purchases a minimum of 3,000 bags November-February season peak period.
About 20,000 bags are auctioned at the private market every week on Saturday and 4,000 in the RMC.
Jaggery farmers said the present price of Rs 1740 offered by the temple for a bag for first grade jaggery power and Rs 1600 per bag for second grand jaggery powder was not feasible for them and many are unwilling to sell it.
The farmers said they had already requested the temple authorities to fix a remunerative price and hoped sales would go up from next week as the Palani Devasthanam is slated to buy a minimum of 5,000 bags.
